Winnipeg Folk Festival 2018 | Stingray Rising Stars
For close to 10 years, Stingray has supported young music talent at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. This year, 32 performers participated in the Stingray Young Performers Program and were mentored by festival performers Jeremy Fisher, Harrow Fair, Fortunate Ones, Jadea Kelly and The LYNNeS who provided invaluable insight into the music industry, songwriting, and performance experience.
Stingray Music and the Winnipeg Folk Festival aim to nurture musicians in the community, showcase up-and-coming artists from across Canada, and provide career stepping stones. The Stingray Young Performers Program, which launched in 2000, received hundreds of applicants each year. A jury of industry professionals selects 35 to 40 promising young musicians aged 14 to 24.
Participants from coast-to-coast have the opportunity of being mentored for a day by established musicians who share a wealth of knowledge about the industry, in addition to learning technical skills and receiving songwriting tips.
The promising young musicians spend their first days in sessions with mentors crafting and perfecting their songs and the final day performing on stage in front of a Folk Fest audience. Many of these young artists have gone on to play the festival as part of the main lineup; artists such as Brandy Zdan, Cara Luft, Crooked Brothers, Daniel Champagne, Del Barber, Richard Inman, Sweet Alibi, and from the lineup this year, Kacy & Clayton, Micah Erenberg, and Roger Roger.
