Karaoke Etiquette 101 | 7 Foolproof Tips
There is nothing like singing karaoke to get the adrenaline pumping! Things can easily get out of hand. Follow these tips to ensure that everyone has a good karaoke time.
It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T!
-
Remember that karaoke is for fun. It’s not a competition. You are not a superstar singing in front of a stadium full of adoring fans. There’s no reason to get upset if you don’t sing well, or if someone sings “your” song or you’re not called to sing as quickly as you would like.
Eagerness is cool, but don’t jump in on someone else’s song, unless they invite you to sing with them.
-
Share the mic. Sure, if no one else is singing, you might request to sing more than one song, but don’t hog the microphone.
-
Politeness will get you everywhere. Be nice to the Karaoke Jockey! They’re the ones running the show. Let them do their thing and list the songs and singers in the order they think best. They’re pros, they know what they’re doing. Be nice to the other singers: if you support them, they’ll support you. Applaud enthusiastically and loudly. Do not boo. Ever.
-
Equipment is not cheap. Don’t abuse it. Don’t swing the mic around your head or anywhere else. Don’t be gross: someone will be singing into the mic right after you. Pay attention to where the monitors and speakers are located. Don’t treat them as furniture. The China Store rule may apply, if you break it you may need to pay for it.
-
Choose your songs wisely and think about the audience you’re singing to. Songs that go over 10 minutes may not be the best choice. Songs with long musical breaks can be a bit awkward unless you’re a good dancer. Songs that are more adult-oriented may not be the best choice at an event where there are children.
-
Take it all in stride. No matter what happens, how well you or others sing, remember it’s about enjoying each other’s company and having fun.
